What Are the Safety, Roles, and Responsibilities of an MRI System

Apr 1, 2021 | Articles, MRI

There’s no doubt that an MRI system is an innovative device that can further improve the early detection and treatment of various diseases. However, healthcare institutions need a sophisticated management program to ensure physicians or radiology technicians practice operational responsibility during an MRI procedure, keeping patients safe while exposed to powerful magnetic fields.

To ensure the MRI system’s safety, every MRI facility must have the following key roles:

Magnetic Resonance Research Director (MRRD)

As the moniker suggests, the MRRD (or MRMD) is ultimately responsible for the operation and safety guidance for the MRI facility. This means that they have the proper training to oversee the safe execution of an MRI examination, so operators can easily seek help throughout the procedure.

Additionally, the MRRD ensures the quality of all MR services, and the implementation of risk assessment programs minimizes MR-related incidents.

The MRRD is also responsible for assigning one Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE) who will handle all matters relating to MR safety and a Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) for performing the safety practices ordered by the MRRD.

Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO)

As mentioned above, the MRRD/MRMD will identify the best senior MRI technologist or radiographer who is fit to take on the role of an MRSO. They will need to be easily accessible on-call to all active operators of the MRI system and reinforce proper safety procedures for the MRI facility.

Besides that, they also need to ensure there are readily available written instructions for MRI safety procedures to lower the risks of using MR equipment. Along with keeping all Heads of Departments, MRI medical staff in the loop with the latest formal procedures, work instructions, and other safety requirements.

Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE)

MRSE refers to a technical assistance role that doesn’t necessarily require a medical background since they will serve as an “engineer: who can provide high-level advice regarding the design, engineering, scientific, and administrative practices that guarantee the safe usage of all MR equipment.

They can also provide valuable, technical insight on MR protocols and advice on MR procedures for patients with implanted devices, metallic foreign bodies, tattoos, and more.

The Bottom Line: Understanding the Importance of an MRI System

MR equipment and procedures can only be done properly with the right team to manage the safe use and execution of MR imaging systems.
