GE MRI Systems – Top 9

Oct 26, 2020 | Articles, MRI, GE

In the medical field, imaging tests are paramount in diagnosing various health conditions and providing the right treatments. They are meant to produce a picture of a body’s interior, which helps a doctor diagnose a disorder, determine its severity, monitor the patient, and provide the right medications or treatment procedures. These tests typically use radiation (x-rays and computed tomography or CT scans), sound waves (ultrasounds), and magnetic fields (magnetic resonance imaging or MRI).

In this article, we’ll specifically cover the various types of GE MRI systems that are currently available in the market, and which models are best suited for your medical facility:

GE 1.5T Explorer

This model type was first introduced as a new upgrade program for 1.5T back in 2015. It was powered by a CXK4 magnet that has been utilized for over 20 years due to its optimal performance and stability. The explorer system is best known as a quiet technology, as it uses the Optix technology for improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Ultimately, any GE MRI version using the CXK4 can easily and quickly be upgraded to an Explorer.

GE 1.5T Creator

This model type was introduced together with the Explorer back in 2015. It is an 8ch, lower-cost version of the model mentioned previously. This means that it has the same CXK4 magnet and Optix RF technology as the Explorer. Furthermore, it is notable for its gradient strength of 33 mT/m Amplitude and 120 Slew rate, which is the same as the Explorer and other model types.

GE 1.5T Optima 450W

This model was launched in 2010, which is more readily available in the secondary market. It is a wide bore- 70cm that can accommodate tall and big patients. Remarkable features of this machine include a redesigned magnet, the introduction of the “Optima” name, and the optical R/F system ideal for cardiology and neurovascular imaging tests.

GE 1.5T HDXT

This model type is an HD, high-field MRI that features either the 15x or 16x software using the CXK4 magnet. This model is usually a result of a series of upgrades from an original HD system. While it is deemed to be a higher-end MRI machine, it is more common and affordable in the secondary market than the Optima.

GE 1.5T HDX

This model type is a year below the HDXT, which still uses the CXK4. All it takes are some electronic and software updates so that it can be upgraded to the HDXT.

GE 1.5T HDe

This model type is GE’s most compact system. Known for saving space, it can reduce space requirements by up to 30 percent. It is also said to be an affordable version of the GE MRI HD with less costly parts. However, this type is an unusual build that’s hard to find in the US.

GE 1.5T HD

This model type is a true HD imaging upgrade, which is a change from the previous generation. It consists of a host of upgrades in software and hardware. This can be your best bet if you’re starting to provide MRI services in your facility and want to reduce upfront costs.

GE 1.5T Excite II

This model type is a transition from the LX to what it is now. GE MRI Excite II features the same ACGD cabinets, though it now has a Linux-based OS to support eight-channel imaging.

GE 1.5T LX

This model type is already outdated but is still seen in the secondary market. It still uses the 9x software and an older Octane computer for imaging.

Conclusion

At this point, we’ve covered the nine models of the GE MRI system—from the GE 1.5T Explorer to the GE 1.5T HDXT up to the GE 1.5T LX. Keep in mind that each has its own features and attributes, as well as its pros and cons. For this reason, be sure to consider all the valuable information discussed above to see which model type is worth investing in for your medical facility!
